Gorillas are one of our closest relatives.
Gorillas are one of our closest relatives, sharing 98.3% of their genetic code with us. They display many human-like behaviors and emotions, such as laughter and sadness and even make their own tools to survive in the forest. Each gorilla has a unique nose print, just like we have unique fingerprints! There are two species of gorilla. Both species live in central Africa but are separated by a large patch of rainforest. They play a key role in maintaining biodiversity of their forest homes as they eat plenty of rainforest fruits and many tree species rely on them to disperse their seeds. Their movements through the forest also open up gaps in the trees, letting light in and helping plants to grow. ⠀
