“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better… it’s not.”⠀
Caring for the environment is becoming more and more important as we begin to see the effects of past behaviours and choices. The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is a wonderful children’s book about protecting the environment. It explores cause and effect (how greed can destroy the environment) and highlights the interconnectedness of the things that live in an ecosystem – if one thing is removed, others are impacted too. The story emphasises the impact that one person, no matter how young, can have. One of our favourite quotes from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is “I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues” and we believe that this is something that we can all aspire to. The book is set in a dark landscape, destroyed by the exploitation of the natural world. This light-hearted but cautionary tale provides a critically important message – we need to collectively protect the environment and find ways to see the beauty in the world around us. Spoiler alert: The Lorax ends with a glimmer of hope, as a single seed is left behind and we’re charged with protecting the seeds, the trees and the forests.
