Simone de Beauvoir
✨SKWOODLE WOMAN✨ Simone de Beauvoir was a French writer, philosopher, political activist and feminist. Her books are still read today!
She is known for lots of things but one of her most famous quotes is “One is not born, but rather becomes, woman.”
The thought behind this is that while there are facts of being a human that we can’t choose, such as being born, who our parents are, or our genes, we shouldn’t use those as excuses not to act.
Simone wrote that the goal is to take control over our own life wherever possible. It’s easy to find excuses not to – many people spend much of their lives doing so or thinking our actions won’t make a difference. Sometimes it’s not possible and where we are born, our communities, culture and history have a big impact on our lives, but as much as possible, we do the best we possibly can.
Simone also thought about the idea that other people also give us the world because they make it meaningful to us. We understand ourselves and the world more when we can relate to others. We can learn to understand our differences.
Simone said “One’s life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others, by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion.”
